Mac Drive Upgrades/Compatibility Database:

Welcome to the Accelerate Your Mac!'s Drive Upgrades/Compatibility Database. The purpose of this database is to show Mac owner reports on hard drives, Optical drives/Burners, FW/USB drives, Tape Drives, NAS, etc. including any issues (in use or during the installation), OS/drive/firmware/media bugs, etc. seen with various storage upgrades in various Mac models and OS versions. Entries are usually added every week so check back often.

Add Your Experience! If you have upgraded or replaced a hard drive, Optical Drive, Firewire, USB, NAS or Tape drive with your Mac, let me know the details (drive model/specs, mac model, OS version, etc.). Please use your drive for a few weeks before sending a report.

Search for reports from our readers!

Search Tips:

  • If you're just looking for a wide range of feedback from owners of your Mac model/series, select a drive type but leave the brand/drive model fields blank. (Not limit results to a specific drive brand/model.)

  • With OS X 10.4.x (aka Tiger) and OS X 10.5.x (aka Leopard), most all DVD burners have native 'generic' iApps burn support. (For OS X 10.3.x and before, generally most drives (except those apple used in macs up to and before that OS era) will require a 3rd party driver/Patchburn profile for iApps burn support. Toast however does not rely on apple burn support.)

  • Most modern DVD burner reports are filed under "DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives" category although they may also support DVD-RAM (and of course most all support CDR/CDRW also).

  • Even though IDE drives are used in Firewire and USB cases, those external drive reports are filed under Firewire or USB interface, not IDE.

  • If the brand you're looking for is not in the list - choose "Other" as the brand and use the browser "Find" feature on the results page(s) to look for specific brand/models. (Most SSD hard drive reports are under "Other" brand)

  • To search for specific model numbers, use the model number entry field. (make sure you enter the model number completely including any prefix letters like "LTR-" or "DVR", etc.) - if nothing found try selecting just by the drive brand/drive type, etc. in case there's a model number change/typo in an entry.

  • You can also use the browser "Find" feature on the results page(s) to jump to specific model number reports or speed ratings, comments, etc.

  • To increase the number of results, you can omit Mac model, OS version or Interface type.

Select Search Criteria: By Drive Type, Interface, and/or Mac Model:

Step 1: Select a Drive Type:

[Optional] Select an Drive Brand:
(Panasonic drives usually under Matshita brand
(Most SSD drives are under "Other" brand)
)

[Optional] Enter Drive Model Number:
(Include any prefix like "LTR-" or "DVR-")

[Optional] Select an Interface Type:
(IDE drives used in Firewire or USB cases are filed under Firewire or USB Interface, not IDE.)

[Optional] Select a Mac Model:

[Optional] Select your MacOS Version:

Step 2: Click Button to Search Reports:

Note: Some OS X comments may still be included in OS 9.x reports. Check there if you do not find enough matches under OS X. (Leave OS option blank to see entries regardless of OS version used.)
To search all entries for a specific Drive Type, regardless of Interface, Brand or Mac Model, leave the "Interface", "Brand", and "Mac Model" drop-downs blank. If your search comes up empty, or with few entries, try leaving the "Mac Model" blank. To search for all drive upgrades performed with a specific Brand, Interface or Mac Model regardless of Drive type, select from one or both of these lists while leaving "Drive Type" blank. Leaving all fields blank will find all posted reports.
